ENGINE CONTROL MODULE - MR

ENGINE CONTROL MODULE – MR

Concept

With the purpose of comply with the most severe pollutants emission and to keep the hight performance of its engines, Mercedes-Benz developed a new series of electronic managed engines. All the fuel delivery phases are electronically controlled, enchancing the fuel combustion and decreasing the pollutants emission. Furthermore mechanical developments were done on engines that had its durability and fuel mechanical characteristics enhanced.

Technological enhancements
The major enhancement is fuel injection system electronically controlled added to the engine and its mechanical fuel delivery system.
The newly developed pump-line-nozzle ( PLD ) fuel delivery system is under control of the electronic engine management system Telligent Engine System.
In the PLD system, the fuel is delivered to the injector nozzles by individual cylinder unit pumps via short high pressure injection lines and pressure line conectors screwed into the cylinder head. The unit pump operating principle is also based on the piston pump principle, like the previously used inline injection pumps but, without leading edges on the pump plunger.
A unit pump installed in the crankcase is assigned to each cylinder. This is driven by another control cam on the camshaft. A part from the classic task of controlling the inlet and exhaust valves, the  camshaft also drives the unit pump.

ENGINE CONTROL MODULE MR – FUNCTIONS

Unused module

Electronic module with very similar function to those of a microcomputer. It has processor, memory and basic program. It is built to work under hard conditions, such as those at engine compartment. This electronic part is called “hardware”. A computer program has been recorded in its memory by the module manufacturer as well as a set of parameters which can only be altered by the manufacturer. This module is not yet able to control the engine, since it still needs to receive data indentifing the engine with which it will operate.

Basic parameters set

At this point the MR module has already recorded a basic parameters set. Now it is able to operate the engine, recognizing its model characteristics. The basic parameters set are engine module characteristic such as torque and power cuve shapes plus EOL ( End Of Line – adjustments that are done at engine test branch ).

Complete data ( flags added )

This module has recorded now all the required parameter. It is able to perform all the function, it recognizing the engine accessories characteristics attached on it. ( fan, constant throtle brake, stater motor, etc )
